Class of 1991 Reunion: First Graduating Class Commits to Service - November 11, 2006

The first graduating class of Essence International School, Class of 1991, celebrated their 15 year graduation on November 11, 2006. The occasion brought together many of the students, several of whom had not met since their graduation day 15 years ago. The event was marked by recommitting to our Essence motto of community service. In the morning, a group from the graduating class - Hadiza Ali, Shuaibu Yayock, Aisha Atta, Hauwa Ali, Ademola Abdulraheem, Aminu Hamza, Wale Mohammed and Hadiza Mohammed - visited the Open Classroom school at Rugan Fulani, a free school established by our school-based NGO to provide basic literacy to the Fulani off Airport Road, Kaduna.
The alumni were excited and appreciative of the opportunity provided to this underserved community and pledged to provide support in the future. During their visit, they decorated the bulletin boards in the 3 classrooms at the Rugan Fulani school. They took several pictures, gave a class on dinosaurs, and were able to interact with the children and young adults at the school, who were thrilled to have visitors at the site.
In the evening, the alumni got together for a fund-raising dinner at the French Cafe in Kaduna. The fund raiser was for the L.E.A Government (public) school in Ungwar Rimi, Kaduna. The alumni group performed their first community service at this school 15 years ago, and wanted to give something back to the children and the school in general. Overall =N=78,000 was raised by the alumni. The plan is to purchase classroom tools like blackboards, chalk and other items to improve the learning environment at the school.
